A Cell Phone for My Mom
Posted by bRev on 06/8/09 in Technology
Except for a short period of time in the 1990s, back when cell phones were HUGE I might add, my mom has never owned a cell phone. That changed recently, though, when I finally decided enough was enough, and she needed a cell phone for emergencies at the very least.
I gave her one of my old phones, one that is fairly easy to use. My husband and I both used to have Motorola phones, but he has upgraded to the iPhone so I got his old phone. Soon I’ll be getting the iPhone too, so then my mom can have the phone I’m using currently — an upgrade for her, too.
Mobile phones seem to be kind of difficult for people of my parents’ generation to get used to, but in this day and age there is no reason for them not to have one, and every reason why it is a good thing. I don’t like the thought of my mom’s car breaking down and her having no way to get a hold of anyone. Plus, as she has already found, when she travels back home to visit her dad (my grandpa), it is awfully handy to have a cell phone!

My mom is so funny with her phone. She used to have a super low tech phone that she was perfectly happy with. It couldn’t even take a picture. Last week my brother and I went to get blackberries and she upgraded to this crazy side flip phone with a full keyboard. For texting. And now she’s texting. Something tells me the older generation is pretty adaptable…

My mom is dangerous with her new iPhone. I gave her my last generation one, and now she quite literally texts me 17 times a day. That’s her current record, and it’s only been 4 days. FOUR DAYS. Starting to wonder if this was a mistake…

Hey, as a mother, I resent this! Not all moms are backward or stuck in the eighties. I’ll have you know that I transitioned seamlessly to cell phones; I even have a brand new iPhone and (gasp) I use it. A lot. So take that.

To be fair, my mom has been pretty with it from day one! She even has Facebook and checks up on me at college with it. She’s actually kind of a technological super sleuth. Kind of extreme, but mostly I find it pretty amusing. Hey, it’s my mom, right?

Yeah, I assume you’re a little bit older, maybe, because my parent’s generation (I’m 19) is VERY with it. She reads parenting blogs and started a family group on Facebook and texts us all the time. It’s pretty cool, actually; its fun that she’s keeping up.

My mom loves to get new shiny phones; we get her one almost every Mother’s day. It’s like her favorite thing ever. She’s a writer online so she stays pretty hip with these things, and we have to tell her to put her phone away as often as we put ours away!
