My new netbook - the Asus Eee 1000HD
I recently decided to go ahead and buy one of the netbooks that have become so popular lately. There were a couple of factors in my decision: My old laptop, which was about the size of the larger netbooks, was having some problems, and the netbook that I’d had my eye on — an Asus Eee 1000HD — went on sale at Best Buy’s outlet store.
So far I’m really happy with the Asus Eee — I’ve been using it regularly in place of my “real” computer, actually. The only complaint I’ve found that I have is the placement of the shift key on the right side of the keyboard — it is in a rather awkward spot, but nothing that I haven’t been able to adapt to with use.
One neat feature is that the Eee came with a year of free online storage. That’s great for backing up files online, so that they can be retrieved if something happens to your computer and hard copy backups, not to mention for accessing certain files wherever you happen to be.
I haven’t used it yet, but I wonder how secure it is. Personally I would be more likely to trust a SFTP file transfer or some kind of service that encrypts your data on the server. I’m a little hesitant to put my files somewhere where, theoretically, any novice hacker could access them. However, I haven’t actually checked out the Asus storage, so maybe it’s not this bad.
That’s not a huge deal, though, because I didn’t get this computer for the free storage anyway. For the purpose I intended it — a laptop I could use for writing and easily transport with me — it is perfect, and I am very pleased with it.
