House Envy
Posted by bRev on 05/23/09 in Real Estate
My husband has what I affectionately call house envy: He’s too quick to compare our house to other people’s… and find it lacking.
For instance, a house around the corner from us sold for a ridiculously good price a year or two after we bought our house. Part of it was that it was on a busy corner, and the other part was that it didn’t look like much. But the young couple who bought it have done a lot to fix it up — landscaping, exterior paint, you name it. All little stuff, but it has really made a difference.
My husband is somewhat bitter about what a good deal they got and what a difference they’ve made to the house, and half-jokingly refers to the guy as Mr. Fix-It.
It’s not that we’re incapable of doing the same. Granted, we don’t have a lot of money to spend on upgrades, so unfortunately things like built in gas grills, outdoor kitchen cabinets, or a garage are out of the question. But we certainly could put in the time and minimal money needed to do a little landscaping here and there, or replace our kitchen sink (something else we’ve been talking of doing for a long time).
Of course, one of the things my husband complains about frequently is that our house is too small. It actually upsets and bewilders me when he does, because I don’t think so. I’m quite content with the size — in fact, I love our little house. If it weren’t for the fact that I want horse property someday, I don’t think I’d ever want to move!

Yeah, I agree. The little things add up and before you know it, you’ve already upgraded your house and it’s more beautiful than before.
I hope you’ll be able to start your house upgrade project soon, if you ever decide to go through with it.
Good luck!

House envy is never good. Sometimes I suffer from that but then I look at my place, and I realize it’s not so bad.
Hopefully you guys’ll be able to get onboard with any possible upgrades!

My fiance has that, too. And I try to take advantage of that conversation and have him agree to start upgrading some parts of the house. It hasn’t worked yet. But it will!

I sometimes have house envy, too. And sometimes we try to start an upgrade plan. But most of the time, they never really materialize.
We will do it one of these days though. One at a time.

I love our little house, too. Besides the fact that it’s really cozy, it’s so easy to clean!

House envy is never good especially when nothing is ever done to remove it.
Hope you and your hubby will eventually get to start your remodeling project soon!

I’m glad you don’t share your husband’s house envy. Or else it’s going to be hell for you both!

Oooh… house envy. That’s always a dangerous subject. Good luck with that and hope you get started on your remodeling projects soon!
