A friend of mine works for a San Diego SEO company.  Most of his day is spent trying to figure out ways to get company websites to the top of Google and other popular search engines.  I had a chat with him the other day about why SEO is so important.

He explained to me that most people will not look past the first or second page of search results on a search engine when looking up a topic.  If they cannot find what they want by that point, they will move on to another search.  Therefore, it is imperative that you be near the top of search engine rankings if you want to have the maximum exposure.

The first step is to identify the keywords that your business or website is most associated with.  Also, you want common variations of those search phrases.  At that point, your website needs to be designed to give it the best shot of being ranked with these words.

Unless you are an expert webmaster, your best bet would be to buy an SEO package from a web design company.  Webmasters with the proper skill and experience can not only effectively design your site, but can also do it quicker and in many cases cheaper than you could yourself.
