Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or CPAP?

If your doctor recommended a procedure named uvulopalatopharyngoplasty to you what do you think your reaction would be? The word doesn’t sound pretty. It can definitely turn you off. But the truth of the matter is that it’s a form of surgery that is considered to be fairly simple. Some patients who have trouble with sleep apnea are now considering having this procedure done so that they don’t have to suffer from the condition anymore. Is the procedure something that you should try if you have been dealing with sleep apnea issues for years? Not necessarily.

It has only recently been discovered that this form of surgery can be a good way to solve the problem of sleep apnea. Some patients are discovering that they can stop using their sleep apnea machine (CPAP) once they have this surgery. That sounds nice but you shouldn’t rush into surgery just yet. You should realize that even the safest of surgeries come along with risks and are not right for all patients. If you’re comfortable using your CPAP machine (as most patients are) then you really don’t need to put yourself through a surgery for sleep apnea. It’s an option to know about in case your situation worsens but most people will probably stick to their machines.
