I have been really careful through most of my life and I have taken care of myself really well. In fact, I often prided myself on being in good health and how lucky that I have been when it comes to avoiding any kind of catastrophe. In fact, my life was pretty safe.

But, six months ago, that all changed. You see, I made one mistake that will have lifelong consequences. It was a simple mistake, but the effects are still felt today.

The mistake that I made was that I turned on the wrong burner on my stove at home. Now, normally this wouldn’t be a bad thing, but there was a glass bottle on the burner. Now, instead of shutting the burner off and letting the bottle cool off on its’ own, I moved the bottle.

Big mistake.

The bottle exploded with a loud boom. The result was that there was glass all over our apartment, and I needed some minor surgery to get the glass out of my hand. But the worst part was the loss of hearing in my right ear.

But now that I have a hearing aid, my right ear can hear again. Sure, it isn’t as good as it was before, but it is pretty close. You just don’t realize how much you take your hearing for granted until you lose it.
