Economy Scares Mean We Have to Protect Ourselves

Times are so scary all of a sudden. It’s terrifying to watch not only retirement and college accounts dwindle away, but also friends and neighbors getting laid off. And when you see how hard it is to find work in general, the fear of getting sick or disabled really hits home.
When you think about it, how many jobs can still be performed if the worker is hurt? I’m a teacher; I think I’d sort of be okay. But my husband owns his own job, and he doesn’t have his own occupation disability insurance. He’s in inspections and remodeling, but you don’t need to have that physical of a job to be afraid of being to hurt to perform it. They have disability insurance for physician, and even dentist disability insurance.
I don’t know what else you could fall back on if you were hurt—is there some sort of worker’s comp? I think the rules for that are strict. It just seems like in this day of lawsuits that we need an umbrella policy in addition to home and car insurance, and that we need disability insurance in addition to medical. For any kind of occupation, really; it’s just not worth the risk.
