Capture the Flag: Variations on a Childhood Game

When I was a kid, we spent every summer at a family resort in the Pocono Mountains. My sister and I often went to the resort’s day camp while the adults did…well, whatever kinds of things adults did back then.
One of the games I remember playing at day camp was Capture the Flag. The children’s game is usually pretty harmless (at least, the daycare and summer camp version is). You split up into two teams, run around in the woods and try to find the other team’s flag. If you catch other team members, you get to take them to your team’s jail.
I’ve played other variations, too. When I was in high school I played a game of Capture the Flag with my boyfriend and his friends, where everyone carried foam swords. People from opposing teams had sword fights, and if you got hit by one of the other team’s swords, you went to their jail.
As an adult, paintball and airsoft versions of Capture the Flag are the ones I hear about the most. Paintball guns fire paint pellets that leave a mark (so that you know who has been hit and by whom), and airsoft guns fire little plastic pellets, like BB guns or pellet guns. These games can be a whole lot more fun than the childhood versions of Capture the Flag — I mean, how can you beat taking down the other team with airsoft sniper rifles?
However you play Capture the Flag, and whatever age you are, this is a fun, competitive group game that everyone is sure to enjoy!
