Green issues are facing us everywhere we turn these days. In order to understand the information that’s being thrown our way, we may find that we need to be familiar with eco-friendly acronyms and the meanings behind them.
People who are involved or interested specifically in green building will find that some of the most important green acronyms to become familiar with are:
DfE – Design for Environment. This refers to a set of concepts related to designing in a way that reduces the overall environmental impact of the design.
EPA – Environmental Protection Agency. This is the government agency that regulates chemical pollution. People involved in green building may need to do work that relates to standards set forth by the EPA. This may also be abbreviated USEPA (for U.S. EPA).
LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This refers to a rating system used to determine how eco-friendly a building is. People interested in this can get leed certification.
USGBC – United States Green Building Council. This is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable building and is involved in education about this issue. This is the group that established LEED.
Of course there are many more green building acronyms related to materials and agencies involved in green building but these are the ones that are must-know acronyms.
