Graduating from college at 40

Graduating from college at 40, feels like the end to a long, lopsided journey. As a non-traditional age student you are surrounded by youth and ingenuity. Younger students type faster, maneuver through power point presentations with ease, and ruthlessly text on their cell phones in class. Although attending classes on campus is the traditional way of learning, many non-traditional students have full time employment and prefer to pursue an online college degree.

A lot of traditional age college students also take classes on line. Undergrads especially will take online associate degrees classes in the summer for earlier graduation. Several of my friends, in a hurry to graduate, take online classes while attending classes on campus. I admire them.

After graduating I’m considering pursuing my master’s degree online. More and more colleges are offering master degree programs online in a wide variety of fields. From healthcare to humanities, as the popularity of online degrees grow so do the options.

Even though my college journey has been long and challenging, it’s shaped me immensely. None of my other siblings chose to pursue a college degree and it’s definitely capped their earning possibilities.  A degree is much more than an earning potential, it’s a testament to your personal perseverance.
