Doing Our Due Diligence

One of the things that I have noticed over the years is that many of the businesses that don’t succeed didn’t do their research before opening shop.  I must admit that I am guilty for doing it myself, and one of my first businesses failed because I failed to do my research before opening my doors.  On a brighter note, I did learn from my mistake, and have become a smarter entrepreneur because of it.

In fact, one of the first steps I take before anything else is find out the customer demographics in my target location before I do anything else.  In fact, I am more worried about the future of the business that I am going to open than finding the funding to open it – if the research data comes back as being positive, the money required for the deal won’t be hard to find.

I also do some research to find out if there are readily available direct mailing lists for the target area to allow us to quickly advertise the new product or service that we will be offering in the community.   As soon as the doors open on the new business, we want to have excitement in the air and people just clamoring at our doors.

Even though we take every step we can to ensure our new businesses success before opening doors, the truth of the matter is that sometimes businesses still fail.  But, if we do our due diligence before opening shop, we do have a good chance of succeeding – I know that is how it has worked out for me.
